Change to Leawood Pet Licensing
We’re reaching out to share an important update about pet licensing requirements in Leawood. Starting Tuesday, January 28, the City of Leawood will transition away from its standard pet licensing program. Instead, all dogs and cats must have either a microchip or a visible identification tag with owner contact information and be up to date on their rabies vaccination.

Why the Change?

·  Animal Control officers already verify rabies vaccinations and check for microchips or tags during complaints, making pet licensing redundant.
·  Eliminating the licensing program allows staff to focus on business licenses and permits, which require more resources.

What Does This Mean for Pet Owners?

·  Identification Tags or Microchips:
o Dogs and cats over six months old must wear a tag or have a microchip with current contact information (a phone number at the least). Tags should always be worn outdoors.
·  Rabies Vaccinations:
o Pets over six months old must have a rabies vaccination or, if exempt for health reasons, a veterinarian's statement. Owners should keep vaccination records available for Animal Control.
·  Parks and Greenways Rules:
o Dogs visiting Leawood Dog Park or other city parks must be vaccinated against rabies. Leash laws and park rules remain in effect.
